KOMO: Terminal Companion in Rust
A virtual companion that lives inside your terminal, built in Rust with Ratatui, Crossterm, SQLite persistence, and a built-in PNG card exporter.
Overview
KOMO (Komorebi Pocket Soul) is a small terminal app written in Rust 1.87+ that puts a living pixel-art companion inside your terminal emulator on Linux, NixOS, macOS, or Windows. I wanted something fun to keep open in a split pane while coding without running a heavy background daemon.
How it works
The habitat is rendered in a 40×22 TrueColor canvas using Ratatui and Crossterm, using half-block Unicode characters for 24-bit RGB pixel graphics and dynamic weather cycles (Day, Breeze, Rain, Night).
Instead of a background process eating RAM, KOMO saves its state to a local SQLite database (rusqlite + Serde) and calculates elapsed real-world time whenever you launch it—updating hunger, energy, cleanliness, and mood deterministically. When you want to share your companion, running komo --share 16:9 renders a crisp integer-scaled PNG card straight from the terminal.
